A Crisis in Education
A recent Washington Post article revealed a growing crisis in our schools: international teachers who have spent years serving D.C. students are now being told that their path to permanent residency is closing. Many of these educators built their lives here. They bought homes, raised children, and believed that their commitment to teaching would lead to stability.
Now, instead of security, they face uncertainty about their jobs, their families, and their future in the United States.
The Human Cost of Policy
As an educator and school leader, I find this heartbreaking. These teachers did exactly what we say we want. They filled critical roles, strengthened bilingual programs, and gave students access to world languages that expand hearts and minds. Yet their dedication is being met with bureaucracy and broken promises.
At The Socratic School of Language, we choose a different path. We recognize that our classrooms thrive because of these international educators.
The Heart of Global Education
Our teachers come from around the world — Colombia, China, Morocco, Mexico, and beyond. They bring authenticity to the languages we teach: Spanish, Mandarin, and Arabic. More importantly, they bring human connection.
Every day, our students are immersed not only in language but in culture. They learn that words like gracias, xièxie, and shukran mean “thank you,” but also carry centuries of family, tradition, and history. Moreover, they discover that a teacher’s accent isn’t something to overlook — it’s something to learn from.
Where others close doors, we keep them open.
Why This Matters for Families and Students
Parents often ask why language immersion matters. The answer is simple: language is the most human way to teach empathy. When children learn from international teachers, they don’t just memorize words — they absorb a worldview.
They see that kindness crosses every language.
They understand that people from different countries can be mentors and friends.
They begin to see themselves as part of something greater — a global community.
Our Promise and Our Stand
The Socratic School of Language may be small, located just outside of Northeast D.C. in Mount Rainier, Maryland, but our mission is mighty. We nurture children who think globally, act compassionately, and speak with confidence about who they are.
Our international teachers are the cornerstone of that mission. Therefore, we stand with them. We advocate for them. And we promise to keep the classroom a safe, welcoming space for everyone — teacher and student alike.
If you are a parent seeking a school that reflects the diversity and beauty of the world, we invite you to apply. Together, we can keep the world connected — one child, one classroom, and one teacher at a time.
