Supporting Children in Language Immersion Programs: What Parents Should Know

A guide for families in Washington DC and Prince George’s County

By Susan Acker, Director

Language immersion programs offer children a remarkable opportunity to develop bilingual skills, cultural awareness, and cognitive flexibility. Schools across the Washington DC area have made immersion education increasingly popular with families who want their children to grow into confident global citizens.

However, many parents discover that as their children progress through these programs, they sometimes need additional reinforcement to strengthen vocabulary, reading comprehension, and confidence in the target language.

After more than a decade of working with children learning Mandarin, Spanish, and other languages, we have found that a few practical strategies can make a meaningful difference for students enrolled in immersion programs.

Maintain Regular Exposure to the Language

Language learning improves with consistent exposure. Even small moments of interaction can help reinforce what children are learning in school.

Families can encourage exposure by:

• reading simple books in the target language
• listening to music or audiobooks
• watching age appropriate programs in the language
• labeling household objects with vocabulary words

These small activities help prevent the language loss that many families notice during school breaks.

Encourage Reading in the Target Language

Literacy sometimes develops more gradually in immersion settings because children are learning to read while simultaneously learning a second language.

Parents can support literacy by:

• reading stories together
• encouraging children to retell what they read
• discussing new vocabulary words
• practicing pronunciation in a relaxed environment

The goal is not perfection. The goal is confidence and familiarity.

Use Language in Everyday Situations

Children remember vocabulary best when language is connected to real life experiences.

Examples include:

• cooking together and naming ingredients
• describing objects and colors during errands
• practicing greetings and simple conversations
• playing games that incorporate language

These experiences help children connect language learning to everyday life.

Prevent Summer Language Loss

Many immersion families notice that children lose some language exposure during the summer months when school is not in session.

Maintaining even light exposure through books, games, or summer immersion language camps helps children retain vocabulary and return to school feeling confident.

Reinforcement Can Strengthen Confidence

Some students benefit from additional reinforcement outside of school, particularly as academic expectations increase in upper elementary grades.

Small group practice with peers allows students to reinforce vocabulary, reading, and conversational skills while building confidence in the language they are learning.
